— 2 —

Logan Ranch is located near the southeastern border of Wyoming at an elevation of 8,087 feet. At the end of my first day, it was wonderful to enjoy the hospitality of Elyse, Robert and their eclectic community of pets and wildlife.

Early in the morning of Day 2, I road off towards Laramie with the sun rising on my back and the wind howling in my face.

A couple of harrowing hours later I drifted into the Travelodge Motel in Laramie and finally relaxed!

If you’ve never ridden a 140-pound upright scooter carrying a 220 pound passenger with 55 pounds of gear and towing a 108 pound, single-wheel cargo trailer over the Continental Divide while negotiating often narrow and debris-strewn road shoulders, then you might not understand why I was a bit tense and definitely fatigued after only a 90-minute ride.

However, if I remind you that I was also attempting to remain balanced upright AND on track while traveling at speeds up to 25 mph INTO head winds AND side winds that often gusted up to 50 mph, then perhaps you might be able to relate to my situation a bit more.

Finally, lest I forget perhaps the MOST “exciting” elements of this only-26-mile morning, allow me to remind (or inform) you that Highway 287 from Fort Collins, Colorado to Laramie is a major trucking route utilized by a very large number of semi-truck drivers pulling long, fully loaded cargo trailers. Most of these huge trucks are traveling at well over 100 kph (60 mph) and obviously create their own tornadic microbursts as they fly by, sometimes only a few feet from your shoulder.

If you will fully consider each of these factors and imagine YOURSELF traveling those same 26 miles on that sunny, windy Friday morning, I’m certain that you will understand why I decided to check into a motel after only 90-minutes of scooting over the snow covered Continental Divide.

However, if none of this brief narrative moves you, I have a sure fire exercise for you to try from the comfort of your living space.

Simply set your alarm to go off in 90 minutes.

Now, grab a broomstick or similarly-shaped object and squeeze it as hard as you can with both hands, and do NOT let up squeezing until the 90 minutes is up.

And now for your core workout, simply alternate between doing sit-ups and squats for 90 minutes WITHOUT STOPPING until your alarm goes off. (And keep squeezing that broomstick!)

If you also want to experience the fear factor and adrenaline rush that results from the passing of the semi-trucks, just watch a scary movie while you’re enjoying your squeezing, squats and sit-ups.

Enjoy!

Who knows, with many more days like last Friday, my Kaabo King GT may have a few less pounds to carry in the foreseeable future.

I wouldn’t mind getting back down to 200 pounds again, but perhaps there’s a better way than being scared stiff while trying to keep a death grip on the handlebars of an upright scooter blasting into a 50-mph head wind as 80,000 pound trucks roar past inches from your feet!

Oh! BTW, did I mention that I’m having a BLAST cruising down the road on this trip?

The Overland Scooter Expedition is truly going to be THE adventure of my life!

Perhaps yours, too!

  1. Yo Rich, looking good after day 2. The imagery surrounding those tornadic microbursts made me chuckle. I can feel how much youโ€™ve endured, but also how entrenched you are in memorable experience. You truly represent that old lovable quote that suggests how life is not about the destination; rather the ride along the way towards.
    Keep inspiring. Iโ€™ll be watching.
