I’ve stumbled upon a general theme for this adventure and perhaps it will encourage everyone who follows along to participate.
The theme is: Firsts!
This is the First epic scooter expedition of it’s kind.
This is First time anyone has used an electric, upright scooter to tow a single-wheel cargo trailer along state, and interstate, highways.
In 1903, George Adam’s Wyman was the first person to make a transcontinental trip west-to-east on a motorized vehicle. He was riding a 200cc “California” motorcycle.
Mr. Wyman spent the night in Walcott, Wyoming. I spent a few hours in the afternoon on Sunday, May 8th at Walcott Junction just before I rode down Interstate 80.
That’s where I read about George and his adventure.
I told Jonathan, the store attendant at Walcott Junction that afternoon that I would send him a picture when I became the record holder for crossing the continent on an electric scooter.
Perhaps he will be kind enough to hang it on the wall next to the article about George Wyman.
Today, in Bridger, Wyoming, I met Jim Newton. A talented musician who may consider doing some soundtracks for my upcoming (someday) videos.
Jim said that he was the first person to shake the hand of the first man to circumnavigate the globe on a 20′ sloop.
Amazing the people (and BIG dogs!) that we meet if we just sit down to have lunch (and charge your scooter, or park your bike, or take off your backpack, or just sit down on a bench somewhere to relax).
Tomorrow I’m going to alter my original plans and ride out of my way to go to Billings, Montana.
In 2014 on my last bicycle tour, on my way back to Colorado from Crater Lake, Oregon via Washington, Idaho and Montana, I stayed one night at the Billings Holiday KOA Campground.
That’s when I learned that this KOA Campground was the very FIRST KOA founded in the world.
It was established in 1962.
It was a First for America and served to fan the adventure spirit of millions of Kampers who have since traversed the continent in every conceivable direction.
I’m here as I write this now.
Technically, it’s a “Second” for me, but it is actually the First time I’ve gotten here by electric scooter.
In fact, I’m pretty sure it’s the very first time that ANYONE has ever arrived at this Number 1 KOA campground riding an upright electric scooter and pulling a single-wheel trailer.
The Theme unfolds!
