A very nice day with views of snow-capped peaks in the distance.

Yellowstone looms over Sylvan Pass at the Park’s East Entrance out of Cody, Wyoming, but today — just like it was on my very first bike tour through Cody in 1991 — Sylvan Pass is closed again. Today the Pass is closed for avalanche danger.

I decided long ago not to go through Yellowstone National Park on my scooter trip. I had enough excitement dealing with two sparring 1,200 bull bison who actually stepped — or, rather, were pushed! — onto the narrow road that I apprehensively peddled along during my first bike tour back in 1991.

That day, 31 years ago this month, is still vivid in my memory.

If YOU ever get the chance to ride your bike 10 feet from the side of two fully grown male bison intent on bullying each other nearly to death, then I’m sure you will understand why I was a little TOO excited that day to be out riding SOLO on a road through a greening meadow populated with HUNDREDS of these monstrous beasts!

And you’ll understand why I didn’t forget.

If you ever get to look into the enormous brown eyes of such behemoths — especially from 10 feet away! — with NOTHING between you and them but thin air, THEN I’m sure yhat you’ll understand why my heart was racing all the while my feet slowly turned the pedals as I kept hoping that I would soon be beyond their penetrating stare and temporarily divided attention.

I passed. They continued fighting. They forgot about me. I never forgot about them.

I can still see those glaring, piercing eyes today, 31 years later.

And my heart races.

But today I have no pedals…

  1. Holy cow Rich!! Over 400 miles since I last checked in! You’ve been putting up numbers like Michael Jordan, and you had quite the view of a bison battle! Hopefully they’ve since made up.
    Cool helmet brother! Keep going!!!!!!

    1. Hey Matt. I’m starting to find my pace. Scooting is getting familiar, but the electronics issues and the documentation is tough. Hopefully I’ll streamline a work flow soon. Until then I’m just trying to keep up-to-date better. Thanks for your comments and interest., Matt. Maybe I’ll be up your way in a few weeks!
